$12M Cultural Anchor is Coming to Dunbar

Six architectural firms presented designs last week for a new cultural center in the Dunbar community.

A new cultural landmark

The 12,000- to 15,000-square-foot building is planned as a community civic and education center, joining the Williams Academy Black History Museum, McCollum Hall, historic churches, murals, and local restaurants that already anchor the newly renovated Roberto Clemente Park along Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

Favorable opportunity for Dunbar

The selection committee has already recommended a firm; City Council makes the final call at an upcoming meeting. Under the arrangement, the city funds, builds, and maintains the facility, while the Lee County Black History Society programs it under a 50-year lease at $1 a year.

I’ve watched this market long enough to know what happens when a corridor gets a real anchor. That’s the goal here: a landmark on MLK Boulevard that drives economic activity and cultural tourism.

Dunbar has history. This is the kind of investment that helps a neighborhood tell that story to the next generation of residents. If you are watching the Southwest Florida market as a buyer, seller, or investor, this is the kind of development worth paying attention to.
